Michael Caine Screens ‘Dr. No’ Rough Cut

We often think of the Broccoli’s Bond movies as a no-brainer. As a walk in the park. Instant success. But hearing Michael Caine tell this story on a talk show opened my eyes to the risk and panic Broccoli felt when putting all his money into the first Bond movie, when only book readers has heard of Ian Fleming or James Bond. And no one, not even fans of Darby O’Gill and the Little People had heard of Sean Connery.

Michael Caine: “I happened to screen the rough cut of the very first Bond movie, Dr. No with Cubby in his private screening room. The movie played very slow and very boring. Cubby was despondent after the screening. Like he wanted to commit suicide. Then he hired John Barry to do the music. Well of course, as we now know, with that great theme music, it made all the difference in the world. So when I saw it again, it played like the fast pace and exciting movie we’ve all come to know.”
