Confirmed: Leiter to Smoke Cigar in ‘Quantum of Solace’

Why was FelixLeiter.com created this year? Because Leiter’s the friggin’ man! Here’s proof:

In July, FLc reported that Felix Leiter lights up in a bar in Quantum of Solace. Now we know from this still that he is smoking a cigar not a cigarette!

The above image was taken from Omega’s new James Bond website. Here’s the bio they have for Leiter at that site:

“Although Leiter doesn’t have 007′s skill in the field, his knowledge and expertise have often arrived for Bond just in the nick of time. Over time Leiter becomes the closest thing Bond has had to a friend, as shown by 007′s extreme reaction to his torture in ‘Licence To Kill’.

Although Bond and Leiter eventually become quite good friends, not much is known about Felix’s private life. Bond first encounters Leiter, a CIA agent, in Casino Royale, when the CIA and MI6 join forces to topple Le Chiffre at the poker tables. Leiter occasionally demonstrates a sense of humour and irony, but little is known about his personal interests.”

I believe this will be the first time since Die Another Day that a Fleming original is seen smoking onscreen. FelixLeiter.com doesn’t advocate smoking but we certainly approve of it when our favorite fictional characters, James Bond and Felix Leiter, do it in the novels and films! Why? Because Fleming created these characters as smokers.

In Ian Fleming’s novels, Commander James Bond preferred a blend of Balkan and Turkish tobacco made for him by Morlands of Grosvenor Street and Felix Leiter preferred cigarettes made by the American company, Chesterfield.

It’s not clear whether Bond will also be seen smoking a cigar in Quantum of Solace but I wouldn’t count on it. He hasn’t been seen with a cigarette onscreen since Licence to Kill in 1989. I was born that year so that should give you an idea of how long it’s been!

The Quantum of Solace theatrical trailer was released yesterday and it features new Leiter dialogue. I think the trailer is great and the dialogue between Beam and Leiter in the tarmac scene is hilarious! I like David Harbour’s Gregg Beam and I can’t wait to see how he’s used in the film.

TARMAC SCENE

Leiter: You know who Greene is and you want to put us in bed with him.

Beam: Yeah, you’re right, we should just deal with nice people.

BAR SCENE

Leiter: James, move your ass.

(I like how they didn’t dub “ass” with “butt” like they did for Dr. Christmas Jones in the The World Is Not Enough trailer. The MPAA is really pushing the envelope these days!)

UPDATE (8/14/08): ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE, WRIGHT WAS REPORTEDLY MACED AND STUN-GUNNED AND CHARGED WITH INTERFERING WITH THE POLICE, A MISDEMEANOR.

According to the Associated Press, Jeffrey Wright, along with fellow actor Josh Brolin and five others, were placed in custody by the police shortly after 2 AM. They were involved in a bar fight early Saturday morning at the Stray Cat bar in Shreveport, Louisiana. Wright and Brolin are currently filming Oliver Stone latest film, W., a President George W. Bush biopic. Wright is playing General Colin Powell and Brolin is playing President Bush.

Bond fans who are paying attention to the buzz on the next film, Quantum of Solace (Opening October 31 in the UK and November 7 in the US), may note that Felix Leiter (played by Wright) has one prominent scene in which he meets 007 in a bar in South America, which erupts into an action sequence shortly afterward.

Talk about life imitating art!

In the ’90′s, EON Productions’ political correctness deprived James Bond fans of seeing Pierce Brosnan’s 007 smoke a cigarette. In Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Bond even described smoking as a “filthy habit,” a line that made Fleming purists shudder. Bond hasn’t smoked a cigarette onscreen since 1989′s Licence to Kill when we saw Timothy Dalton’s 007 light up a Lark.

Unfortunately, Daniel Craig’s 007 probably won’t light up in Quantum of Solace but it looks like Felix Leiter will! Take a look at the smoke coming from the bar counter in this screenshot that I extracted from the teaser trailer:

It’s unclear whether we’ll actually see Leiter (and/or Bond) puff on a cigarette in this scene or if we’ll just see smoke coming from an ash tray. Either way, I’m just happy for some implied smoking especially from Jeffrey Wright’s Felix Leiter, my personal favorite interpretation of the character!

Our friends at CommanderBond.net posted this YouTube video yesterday. It originally aired on the Dailies show on ReelzChannel and features new clips of James Bond (Daniel Craig), M (Judi Dench) and Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright)!

In the new footage, Leiter can be seen talking with Bond at a bar (possibly in Haiti). This “bar scene” isn’t news because FelixLeiter.com posted a video with a brief glimpse of the scene in March, however, this footage is from a different and much closer view.
