Confirmed: Leiter to Smoke Cigar in ‘Quantum of Solace’

Why was FelixLeiter.com created this year? Because Leiter’s the friggin’ man! Here’s proof:

In July, FLc reported that Felix Leiter lights up in a bar in Quantum of Solace. Now we know from this still that he is smoking a cigar not a cigarette!

The above image was taken from Omega’s new James Bond website. Here’s the bio they have for Leiter at that site:

“Although Leiter doesn’t have 007′s skill in the field, his knowledge and expertise have often arrived for Bond just in the nick of time. Over time Leiter becomes the closest thing Bond has had to a friend, as shown by 007′s extreme reaction to his torture in ‘Licence To Kill’.

Although Bond and Leiter eventually become quite good friends, not much is known about Felix’s private life. Bond first encounters Leiter, a CIA agent, in Casino Royale, when the CIA and MI6 join forces to topple Le Chiffre at the poker tables. Leiter occasionally demonstrates a sense of humour and irony, but little is known about his personal interests.”

I believe this will be the first time since Die Another Day that a Fleming original is seen smoking onscreen. FelixLeiter.com doesn’t advocate smoking but we certainly approve of it when our favorite fictional characters, James Bond and Felix Leiter, do it in the novels and films! Why? Because Fleming created these characters as smokers.

In Ian Fleming’s novels, Commander James Bond preferred a blend of Balkan and Turkish tobacco made for him by Morlands of Grosvenor Street and Felix Leiter preferred cigarettes made by the American company, Chesterfield.

It’s not clear whether Bond will also be seen smoking a cigar in Quantum of Solace but I wouldn’t count on it. He hasn’t been seen with a cigarette onscreen since Licence to Kill in 1989. I was born that year so that should give you an idea of how long it’s been!

New Leiter Dialogue in ‘Quantum’ Theatrical Trailer

The Quantum of Solace theatrical trailer was released yesterday and it features new Leiter dialogue. I think the trailer is great and the dialogue between Beam and Leiter in the tarmac scene is hilarious! I like David Harbour’s Gregg Beam and I can’t wait to see how he’s used in the film.

Leiter: You know who Greene is and you want to put us in bed with him.

Beam: Yeah, you’re right, we should just deal with nice people.

BAR SCENE

Leiter: James, move your ass.

(I like how they didn’t dub “ass” with “butt” like they did for Dr. Christmas Jones in the The World Is Not Enough trailer. The MPAA is really pushing the envelope these days!)

Leiter Mentioned in ‘Quantum’ IMDb “Review” (Possible Spoilers)

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) message boards aren’t renowned for being reliable so anything posted there should be taken with a grain of salt.

Recently, a member posted a review of Quantum of Solace, claiming he attended a test screening of the film. It could be fake but it sounds legitimate enough for me to mention it. Here’s a link to the review which was reposted at the CBn Forums.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

Leiter is mentioned a few times:

Felix is underused. He’s in the first half and hour then dissappears, only to turn up a little at the end.

Felix gives all the details on Medrano, who untill the finale really works as the films main villain, despite what the press for the film suggests it’s onlt at the end does Greene really come to the forefront.

The third edition of James Bond: The Secret World of 007 by Alastair Dougal will be released in the UK on October 20. It will be exactly the same as the last two editions except for a new section dedicated to Quantum of Solace. The UK Dorling Kindersley (DK) website has just posted a hi-res scan of one of the new pages and it includes a little information on the status of Bond and Leiter’s relationship in the new film.

Bond’s determination to bring down White’s shadowy organization threw his personal and professional relationships into turmoil. MI6 colleagues and friends like Felix Leiter were suddenly unsure which side Bond was on, apart from his own. Bond found trust in some unlikely quarters.

Leiter found his loyalty to Bond compromised by orders from the CIA.

This new information certainly meshes with what we are told about Bond’s relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the film’s official synopsis:

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organisation.

I highly recommend NOT purchasing this book if you already own one of the first two editions because DK only added a few new pages. The rest of the pages remain unchanged from the previous editions which is a rip-off! The cover is nice though.

You’ve seen the photos from the CIA jet/airport sequence throughout the year but do you really know anything substantive about the sequence? Don’t read any further if you’re trying to stay spoiler-free because FelixLeiter.com has compiled the photos for an in-depth analysis of the sequence’s context. This analysis is based on what we’ve learned about the scene over the course of the shoot. Much of the following information is confirmed but some of it is unconfirmed and/or conjecture.

Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

According to a source, Gregg Beam takes a call from M via mobile phone on a tarmac in Haiti.

According to this guy at the BondMovies.com Message Board, “Within the building of the [Austrian airport] terminal, the credit card of Bond is denied when disqualified by M and added to the list of those to be ‘captured or killed’ by MI6.” (See: Photo 009)

Where?

CIA jet (30,000 feet in the sky); airport tarmac in Bregenz, Austria (filmed at Farnborough Airport in England), airport terminal (filmed at Farnborough Airport in England)

According to this guy at the BondMovies.com Message Board, “Farnborough Airport was used to stage the mysterious meeting between the CIA and Dominic Greene at the airport of Bregenz, Austria.”

When?

According to my source, the filming at Farnborough Airport took place in mid-January.

Why?

My source says, “It appears that the CIA are indeed granting members of Quantum safe passage to Europe.”

Two Quantum of Solace photos from this website were e-mailed to FelixLeiter.com earlier today. You’ll notice that this one is brand new:

Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), the film’s main villain, is aboard what I believe to be a CIA jet with Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright). Based on the progress map behind Greene, I think it’s safe to say that they’re en route to Europe (most likely to Austria for the opera) from Haiti. This prediction certainly meshes with Leiter in Haiti with Gregg Beam? This new image appears to be from the same scene as this photo with CIA agent Gregg Beam (David Harbour) and Felix Leiter:

The following excerpt from the official Quantum of Solace synopsis may give us a clue as to the context of the aforementioned scene: “Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.”

November 14th can’t come soon enough!

The strategic move places the highly-anticipated James Bond adventure one week closer to the prime movie-going holiday window and takes advantage of last week’s decision to move the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

“We saw the film recently in London and Marc Forster, Daniel Craig and the entire team at EON have truly delivered another extraordinary Bond adventure,” said Jeff Blake, Chairman of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for the Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Group. “Quantum of Solace is a seamless continuation of the storyline that began with the last film.
